Celebrities Hailing from the Cleveland Area

While it’s smaller than major entertainment hotspots like Los Angeles and New York, the Cleveland metropolitan area has drawn the interest of numerous celebrities thanks to its low cost of living, close-knit community atmosphere, first-rate cultural attractions, and exceptional dining scene.

For high-profile individuals seeking a low-key and laidback place to call home, Greater Cleveland is a perfect choice. On this post, we’ll take a look at some notable celebrities who originate from Cleveland.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry was born in Cleveland and is named after Halle’s, a local department store chain based in the city. She spent most of her early years in Oakwood, Ohio, working at Higbee’s Department Store and going to school at Bedford High School. In 1986, she studied broadcast journalism at Cuyahoga Community College. At the time, she joined several beauty pageants and was named Miss Teen All-American in 1985 and Miss Ohio USA in 1986.

Drew Carey

Raised in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood, Drew Carey graduated from James Ford Rhodes High School in the 1970s and then went on to attend Kent State University. In 1980, he enlisted into the US Marine Corps Reserve, where he served for six years in Ohio’s 25th Marine Regiment as a field radio operator. Carey began his comedy career in 1986 at the Cleveland Comedy Club and landed a spot on HBO’s Annual Young Comedians Special in 1991.

The Russo Brothers

Born and raised in Cleveland, Anthony and Joseph Russo – better known as the Russo Brothers – directed four of the highest-grossing films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which grossed over $2.7 billion worldwide. The brothers attended Benedictine High School, a private college preparatory school in Cleveland.

Steve Harvey

Steve Harvey spent his childhood along East 112th Street in Cleveland, which was renamed “Steve Harvey Way” in 2015. Harvey graduated from Glenville High School in 1974 and attended Kent State University and West Virginia University afterward. He had a rough start as a comedian, sleeping in his 1976 Ford in between gigs. He first performed as a stand-up comedian in 1985 at the Hilarities Comedy Club. Harvey’s first big break was being named finalist in the Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1990, leading to a long stint as the host of “It’s Showtime at the Apollo.”

The Kelce Brothers

Before Eagles center Jason Kelce and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce made history as the first brothers who faced off in the Super Bowl, they were just two kids growing up in Cleveland Heights. The brothers kicked off their football careers at Cleveland Heights High School in the early 2000s. When the two went head-to-head at Super Bowl 57 in Phoenix, their alma mater lit up in green and red to pay homage to each brother’s team colors.
